Airstreams and the environment

Wally Byam designed the original Airstream template in 1934; in 1936 the first riveted aluminum shell took to the road.

Wally had a vision that Airstreams were the very stuff that dreams were made of and is famously quoted as saying: “I make your travel dreams come true.” One of his aims was to create a trailer with a streamlined, eco-friendly shape, unlike the traditional box trailer. A shape that he believed would conserve fuel and tow more smoothly.

He said he wanted to create a unit that “traveled like a stream of air” and so the name was conceived. Wally’s Airstream dream came true as Airstreams use around 20% less fuel to tow than standard box trailers. And to this day “While producing the Cadillac of trailers, Airstream outsells all but the lowest priced Chevy.”

If we live in a throwaway society then Airstreams are something to aspire to as they are designed to last. It is estimated that approximately 70% of all Airstreams ever made are still in use today. They get handed down from generation to generation and rarely get destroyed.

Constructed from wood, steel and of course aluminum, every part of an Airstream is reusable–if one does finally meet its demise every part can be recycled.

Travel in style and rest assured you are doing your bit for the environment. Silver is green!
