Halabja was brought to international attention in the closing months of the Iran-Iraq war when on March 16th 1988, the Ba’athist Government of Iraq attacked the city with chemical weapons. More than 5,000 civilians were killed and another 10,000 seriously wounded. 75% of the victims were women and children.
The devastating attack crippled the community. Largely neglected by their own government and abandoned by the international community, the people of Halabja have struggled to rebuild their city for the last two decades. Many residents, and children born since the attack, suffer from physical disabilities. The area is still a minefield with bombs being unearthed on a regular basis.
Although the fighting has ceased, the town is undergoing major reconstruction resulting in increased traffic and hazardous building sites at every turn. Schools have recently reemerged, but they are basic and have limited supplies. Although the city is inhabited by thousands of children there is not a single playground or green space for them to play. Many children work full or part time and the many social and cultural pressures restrict a freely chosen creative play life. Play is essential for child development and is enshrined in the UN Convention as a right of every child.
Halabja Play is a registered charity that has been working directly with the children to create a large, open air adventure playground. The project started in 2009 and is now in its final stages. A percentage of the profits of Airstream Facilities is donated to the charity on an annual basis and will continue to be until it reaches its completion.
Halabja Play welcomes donations no matter how small or large. 100% of investments are used to fund the project and all workers give their time on a voluntary basis. To get involved in this very worthwhile project go to: http://halabjaplay.org/donate/
